Signs You Fear Your Own Success

Success. It’s something we as comedians all strive for and desire. Everyone’s idea of success is different from one comic to the next and changes as time passes. Maybe your idea of success is late-night television? Working the clubs? Or an hour special? Whatever you think success is, there is no doubt it’s a positive. Or is it? There is the other side that I have seen in many comedians both on the scene and those who are actually carving out a name in the industry; it’s the f

You Shouldn’t Be In Comedy If...

In this industry, you run into a lot of people, personalities, etc. Some of these people are great talents, savvy business people, and have a level of wisdom when it comes to being in the industry; such qualities are definitely an indicator of how far one will go in their career. But then there’s the flipside to that coin, where there are certain people you always have to ask “why are they even in comedy?” They’re exhausting to deal with or seem to just be taking up space. T

    Has Comedy Lost Its Allure?

Something that has been on my mind recently is the concept of comedy and how it has in a sense lost its overall allure. Back in 2015, Jerry Seinfeld made an assertion that “comedy is dead,” citing the rise of “PC culture” as a main culprit in this theory. Since then, PC culture has been an ongoing topic in both the comedy community and with the masses. Additionally, there has been a huge rise in comedy consumption; Netflix is likely making the biggest profit off of comedy tod

    Pretty: The Unspoken Comedy Prerequisite

Back in October 2017, I attended a show at the Village Underground featuring Judy Gold and Jessica Kirson. I learned a lot at that show, not from just seeing Judy and Jessica perform (good God are they talented), but from their interactions with audience both on and off the stage. One interaction I remember was with an audience member who asked “what’s the most frustrating thing about being a woman in comedy?” I was expecting Jessica and Judy to respond with the classic argum

Comedy vs. “PC” Culture: Funny Will Always Prevail

Comedy has become a hot topic in the past years for something I find to be negative to the community: political correctness. “PC culture” often feels like an ex that won’t go away. At first it seems to mean well, but over time you realize it’s main goal is to destroy your life. I’m not sure why on a societal level so many have embraced PC. Perhaps people have too much time on their hands these days, but there is a level of oversensitivity that leads to just about anyone getti

West Side Comedy Club: A New Kind of “West Side” Story

The New York City comedy community recently added a new addition that’s already shaking up the scene: Westside Comedy Club. Located at 201 W. 75th Street, Westside Comedy Club is situated in New York City’s Upper West Side, just blocks away from the prolific Stand Up NY. It is owned by Eugene and Thomas Wilson with Gina Savage, Nina Ashe, and Lori Sommer managing the club. We decided to check out the 8:00 PM show on 10/13/2017 and give our thoughts on what stood out about thi

2017 Comedy on NetFlix: My Top 5

NetFlix has become one of the top sources for stand-up comedy viewing so I took the time to watch as much of it as possible and see what is worth watching. Here are my top five “must-watch” picks for NetFlix comedy in 2017! 1. The Standups The Standups is a series of thirty minute specials similar to Comedy Central’s The Half Hour, but without the annoying commercials. Season 1 features Deon Cole, Nikki Glaser, Fortune Feimster, Beth Stelling, Nate Bargatze, and Dan Soder. S

Comics: You Are Your Own Brand

Something you often hear about in business is branding. Whether it’s a SkinnyGirl Cocktail or your wireless provider, branding is how we create an identity. How does this relate to comics? Comedy is the one entertainment profession where you aren’t hiding behind a script or a song to perform. It’s your recent breakup, experiences with depression, or your highbrow opinion on AMBER alerts being judged and picked apart. For comics the concept of branding can be confusing because

He Said, She Said: Battle of the Sexes

Lights. Camera. Competition! Comedians on the Loose took a field trip to Broadway Comedy Club this past week to enjoy the “He Said, She Said” comedy show hosted by Samantha Dippold Peluso. The show is formatted as a duel between opposing teams to see who has better material and presence. The show featured two comedy duos: Kyle Pennant and Dean David representing the men; Sonja Savanovic and Jula Branda representing the women. The show started off with the bubbly Samantha Dipp

    Stand-Up Comedy: 5 Misconceptions & Realities

Myths of the comedy scene get debunked Comedy is an industry that seems to have many identities. Some think it’s glamorous whereas others view it as dark and lonely. This can bring about many misconceptions that plague the industry today. Here are our top misconceptions and the realities I’ve realized as a comic in the New York comedy scene. Misconception #1: You have to do tons of bringer shows to get anywhere. Reality: When it comes down to it, bringer shows are likely goin
